Fastrak Great Lakes Director Jeff Curtin presents $5000 check to Diemel captures the FASTRAK Memorial Day Salute The fans and drivers were greeted by sunny skies and wind as the FASTRAK Memorial Day Salute took the stages on the biggest ever paying event in the FASTRAK Great Lakes Region. A total of 22 FASTRAK drivers took part in the historical evening that was shared with 27 of the best Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Cars and 16 drivers of the IMCA Northern Sport Modified Division. First up for the FASTRAK Great Lakes Division was qualifying. 2 laps of top speed would set the field for heat racing action. After all was said and done it was Tigerton WI driver The Big Hirt Justin Hirt taking home the claim to fame as the fast qualifier of the night in a lap of 23.1 followed by 2 nd generation and current WISSOTA Late Model driver who put in a GM 604 for the event Paul Parker who turned in a lap of 23.4 seconds on the big half mile. As the event was straight up from qualifying to feature this had Hirt on pole of heat race 1. On the drop of the green flag Hirt grabbed the lead in the caution free event and cruised to victory over WISSOTA Late Model Veterans Tim Buhler and Troy Springborn, who were followed by Rueter, Grosskreutz, A.Wickersheim, Welch and Nordland. Heat race #2 saw front row starters Paul Parker and Dave Fieber battle intensely for the lead. In the end Fieber was able to pull away with a comfortable win over Parker who was followed by, Bennett , Casper, Curtin and Jeff Wickersheim. The final heat race of the night paired WISSOTA Veteran AJ Diemel with young gun Brett Swedberg on the front row. Swedberg pressured the veteran early but to no avail as Diemel gained a comfortable lead and let the battle for 2 nd ensue as Swedberg tried to fend off a hard charging Scott Lewis. As the checkers flew on the last heat race of the night for the FASTRAK Memorial Day Salute it was AJ Diemel taking the win over Lewis and Swedberg who was followed by, Wanta, Naeyert , Goerst and Bjorkland. Before the green flag dropped the FASTRAK Great Lakes Division paid homage to our service men and women who fight for our freedom every day and allow them to be free and be able to race and put on shows for all of their fans with a 4 wide salute. Once the green flagged dropped it was with an early lead entering turn 1. The battles were fierce throughout the pack as drivers scratched and clawed their way to better their positions. A single incident on lap 9 involving driver Joel Bennett would bring out a yellow and tighten up the field erasing Hirts lead. Following Hirt in the line up would be Diemel, Parker, Springborn, Buhler, Fieber and Swedberg. The restart saw the cars charge for positions as Hirt pulled out to the lead. The next 15 laps would go caution free and would see Diemel reel in Hirt and be at his door only to see Hirt maintain the lead. Soon the drivers were entering lapped traffic and Hirt was hitting just right and began to pull away from Diemel. Lap 24 saw what would a long series of yellows as Cody Grosskreutz expired a motor. This was only the beginning of many as the drivers found it hard to get another single lap in. Several cautions plagued the next laps as restarts were aborted due to incidents. Once the green flag flew Hirt charged into turn 1 defending his lead, but Hirt ducked too low and clipped one of the inside retaining tires. 2 nd place running AJ Diemel pounced on the opportunity of Hirts misfortune and challenged the young driver heading down the backstretch. As the cars came off of turn 4 it was Diemel in command followed by Hirt. The event would go caution free the rest of the way as Diemel was able to pull away from Hirt to claim the big payday. Following Diemel it was: Hirt, Springborn, Naeyert, Fieber, Swedberg and Lewis.
